Trying to use only clean beauty products is a challenge! If you are really into it, you can find recipes for everything from making your own foundation to soap to mascara! The more I read about chemicals and toxins, the more I feel compelled to examine labels and understand what goes into the products Im putting on my skin and hair.
I stumbled upon this article today and its certainly worth your time to read. You can still buy luxury products at the department stores, Sephora or go to the drugstore and stock up on your favorite cosmetics, just be informed of the ingredients. I use- and- like so many products that are not ‘green’ however, if the majority of the time I’m using makeup and haircare that is non-toxic, then I feel pretty good. I don’t aim for perfection but aim to be pretty good most of the time.
A couple of things I do (not all the time but a lot of the time) is make my own products. These are simple and easy which is good because I can be super lazy when it comes to doing extra work.
Make Your Own Toothpaste
The toothpaste one isnt too hard. Take a about two tablespoons of coconut oil (I keep a jar downstairs for cooking and upstairs for using as a moisturizer), two tablespoons of baking soda (for a little gentle scrubbing action) and a few drops of peppermint oil for flavor. Mix until you obtain a paste type texture.
Make Your Own Deodorant
Another super duper easy thing to do and it really works. Take about a cup of baking soda, several drops of essential oil (I use lavender or rose) and mix well in a small container. Use a large blush brush to “brush” onto your arm pits. Its really amazing how well this works. If I know Im going to be hot and sweaty, I will use Trader Joes or Lavanila deodorant as a base then use this mixture on top.
Make Your Own Dry Shampoo
Take about one cup of cornstarch, add several drops of essential oil and shake in a container with a top. You can also add about two tablespoons of baby powder to this mixture. I shake this into my hands then run through my hair concentrating on the scalp which for me, tends to get greasy.
