Emmy Night Fashion

Here is the big fashion recap from Emmy night! I asked my pal Beth Bender of Beauty Style Watch to chime in and add her thoughts. Keep reading!

Eva Longoria Parker gives us  no big surprises here, she’s always dressed in flattering gowns that accentuate her tiny waist. Ive seen this look before on her but thats okay because its a good look. I’ll give her two thumbs up for a lovely dress and accessories.

I love Claire Danes hair and dress. Please tell me she’s wearing some kind of sparkling diamond earring…to not wear any jewelry at all would be criminal. A cocktail ring or tasteful diamonds would have been perfection. You can’t just wear a gown, does she not watch The Rachel Zoe Project? With that being said, Claire’s dress was my fave of the whole night. I’d wear it (with an accessory).

Beth says: Claire Danes looked just beautiful! Her dress was fabulous and the color looked gorgeous against her skin tone. I actually liked the fact that she had no accessories on and think it was a smart move since her gown was so stunning and has lots of bling. Her skin looked flawless, and I loved the tight chocolate brown eyeliner around her eyes which made the color pop even more.

Tina Fey and Mariska Hargitay look lovely. Im in love with the pale blush shade of Mariska’s dress and Tina often wears black but it looks good on her. Glad to see Tina’s hair pulled back and showing off cool earrings. Love both of these girls. (as a writer I’m kind of in awe of Tina)

Beth says: Mariska Hargitay looked fabulous! I loved her hair and makeup, and those eyebrows were outstanding! Her earrings were perfect for the gown she was wearing and her skin looked dewy, and I loved her soft peach cheeks and nude lip.

Tina Fey, not so good. I just love Tina but her dress did not work for me at all. Uggggh! I hated the pattern and thought it was not flattering for her shape.  A few hair extensions and some sexy waves would have been much nicer. Maybe even a few false lashes to open up her eyes. I mean come on people, this is one of the few times you get to play dress up. So have some fun!

Kim Kardashian, or as Joel McHale on The Soup calls her, Kardassian.  What can we say about Kim? She looks like she was drawn in the Disney animation studio and has come to life as a real live Princess Jasmine! I like the dress and the cuff, her is done appropriately for the gown. I’m not bowled over but she does look good.

Beth says: Kim Kardashian…hmmmm....not really sure why she got an invite, and did you notice her mom Chris trying to get a few props on the carpet. I didn’t care for her dress at all. I thought it looked like she was going to a toga party instead of a Hollywood Awards event.

I did like her makeup which was actually very soft compared to the very heavy makeup she is usually seen wearing.

Think of how great Kyra Sedgewick’s dress would look with a slim bejeweled belt, hmmm?  It just needs a POP of something at the waist, do you agree?  I get the hair, all loose and curly but maybe it would have been nice in one of those messy buns. Slim belt, messy bun. I love the color of the dress though.

Let me take a moment to say YAY! JANE LYNCH WON! She makes me laugh out loud on Glee and I can only imagine the fun the writers have coming up with her one line zingers. Im really into the dark purple shade which looks good on almost everyone. Lea Michele’s dress wasn’t my fave, with all those fussy ruffles! I do however, like her necklace and makeup.

Beth says: I loved Lea Michele’s makeup and hair but was on the fence about her gown. It was a little too grown up for my taste, and seemed to swallow her up. I think a different color and not so much fabric would have definitely made a huge difference.

The first thing I noticed was her cat eyes of course and I loved them. Her makeup was beautiful and red carpet appropriate. Her skin looked luminous and her hair looked gorgeous with soft cascading waves that framed her face.

Heidi Klum would like you to know that a mother of four in her late 30’s can still rock a micro mini dress, just don’t try this at home. A little self-indulgent, as Simon Cowell would say, to wear a short dress to the Emmys, I think. Its not the MTV Awards! If that dress came to her knees, I’d be fine with it.

Nina Dobrov is a goddess here! I love the hair, makeup, earrings, one shoulder, the gathering at the waist, the length, the color, everything.

Angela Kinsey from one of my favorite shows The Office. I like her hair and makeup, love the black simple dress. Note the sparkly earrings and single bracelet. Not too much, just enough.

Everyone’s favorite 88 year old, Betty White. She looks like a delicious scoop of Baskin Robbins sherbet in this pastel two piece.

Jayma Mays in that popular navy shade. I like it. I think she is just adorable! The dress fits like a glove, her hair is amazing and the gold accessories highlight the gold in her hair. Well done Jayma!

Head to toe gorgeous! Sofia Vergara (am I the only one who remembers her and Tom Cruise dating for a quick minute several years ago?) looks perfect. Hair, awesome! Makeup, stunning! Accessories, perfect!

Celebrating the EMMY’s at the Lukaro Salon

First things first! Suave ran a campaign for fans to decide on Sofia Vergara’s hair style and the winning look was Glamorous Waves  which happened to be my favorite!

Here is the official scoop from Suave:

Vergara turned heads on the big night with her glamour waves style by Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist Jenny Cho, the winning look voted for by thousands of Americans.

Sofia’s entire award show look – the dress and the Suave Professionals products used to create the winning look – will be auctioned by the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation (www.clothesoffourback.org/suave) to benefit children’s charities across the globe starting Monday, August 30 at 8:00 a.m. EST.

I headed over to Beverly Hills to watch the Emmy’s, courtesy of Suave at the Lukaro Salon. You might know Luke O’Connor from styling the tresses of the most beautiful and glamorous actresses in Hollywood like Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Debra Messing, Brooke Shields to  name a few. And don’t those women have  great  hair?
Luke worked on my own measly locks a few years ago when I attended the Glamour Magazine Reel Women event. I never forgot how expertly he wielded those scissors and by snipping a little here and there, literally transformed my hair.
I was beyond excited to see what Luke would do…and using very little product and not a lot of heat, once again he made my hair look incredible. If you find yourself in Beverly Hills, do yourself a favor and go to his salon! Not only is it welcoming and luxurious, but Luke is the best in the business.  Seriously he is a miracle worker!
We watched the Emmy’s on big screen tv’s, ate delish appetizers and relaxed a bit. I met  Theodore Leaf who you will be hearing a lot about in the coming years. Theodore is ultra talented and has come on board with Suave to be one of their consulting hair professionals.  He is also adorable and fun.
You can find Suave everywhere, their products are worth your time to try out. And you can find out more about the Lukaro salon here!

Emmy beauty, Christina Hendricks

I’m sure it doesn’t take much to get Christina Hendricks ready for anything. She probably wakes up looking fantastic. For her Emmy night look, makeup artist Vanessa Scali created this soft, etheral look to match Christina’s Zac Posen gown. Here is all you need to know:

Face: Vanessa prepped the skin with Lancôme’s La Base Pro. To perfect Christina’s already luminous skin, Vanessa used Lancôme’s new Teint Miracle Lit-From-Within Makeup. “It has an amazing transparent quality that leaves the skin looking flawless and luminous without being shiny,” said Vanessa. “I applied it with a brush and then blended with my fingers.” Blending with her fingers heated up the foundation a bit, allowing for a seamless finish. Vanessa followed with Effacernes Concealer under the eyes, her “all time favorite concealer.”

Cheeks:  For a fresh pop of color I used Lancôme’s Blush Subtil Shimmer in Pink Pool on the apples of her cheeks. Dabs of Giorgio Armani Beauty’s Fluid Sheer #2 highlighted Christina’s cheekbones.

Eyes: The eye shadow was mix of YSL’s Ombre Solo Eyeshadow in Cashmere Brown and Midnight Black. “I applied these all over her lid, under the bottom lashes and blended it out past her natural lash line to softly elongate the eye,” reported Vanessa.

Eye Liner:  To define and elongate the lash line, Vanessa lined the eyes with Lancôme’s Le Crayon Khôl in Black. “I used a touch of liner under her bottom lashes but smudged it for a softer look,” said Vanessa.  For added depth, Vanessa used Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner in Noir at the very base of Christina’s lashes.

Mascara:  Several generous coats of Lancôme Définicils Waterproof Mascara in Black were used on the top and bottom lashes.

Lips:  Christina’s lips were a mix of Lancôme lip colors for an effect that Vanessa described as “red with a little dash of pink.” A sheer coat of Color Design Matte Lipstick in Corset was topped by La Laque Fever Lipshine in Cyber Coral.

Keri Russell, Emmy beauty

I’ve admired Keri Russell since she played Felicity. I think she looks like a doll, small, even features and natural beauty. I love the color of her dress by the way.

Last night her look featured NARS makeup. And here’s what was used:

PRO-PRIME Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base and Skin Smoothing Face Prep

Tzarine Duo Eyeshadow (NEW for Fall 2010)

Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo

Douceur Blush (NEW for Fall 2010) topped with Desire Blush for a pop of color

Tashkent Pure Matte Lipstick (NEW for Fall 2010)

“We wanted to give her look a classic feel to coincide with the vintage dress she’s wearing. Her warm skin tone and the coolness of the dress was the perfect combination for reflecting the same tones through her makeup: warm eyes, and a cool peachy matte lip. It’s flirty with a bit of sass.”

Thoughts on Emmy night…

Dianna Agron is gorgeous. You really cannot get more beautiful than this picture perfect girl. But the dress reminds me of my friend who dressed like Scarlett O’Hara on Halloween back in sixth grade. Also reminiscent of Little Bo Peep. I think if the dress only had one lacy tier and she wore platform peep toes, I would have liked the look.

Oh dear. Poor January Jones. As soon as she came on the screen, I thought of those Project Runway challenges where the contestants have to run through a party goods/office supply/grocery store and grab random items then cobble together a look. Its all coffee filters, blue plastic picnic plates and foil. However, she’s so pretty and that color blue is stunning.

 What. On. Earth.

Rita, Rita, what are you wearing? Its a chain, its a fence, its the suit divers wear when they explore shark reefs, its beads and crystals. Its a hot mess. And then there’s this:

Chandelier shoes! With velcro straps? Rita, if you need my styling help please give me a call. Because you will end up on the worst dressed lists (yes, plural) today. Although when she took those shoes off, she might have stuck a light bulb in them and hung them over her dining room table and recycling is a good thing.

Naya Rivera from Glee is another pretty girl who fell victim to a poor fashion choice. You could easily take this photo and add the heading Prom: 1990.

I think its the angle but it appears Anna Paquin is smuggling a gift box under her dress. Something is square and boxy. A present maybe? Another outfit?

The dress is not my favorite, let’s be kind. The top is all Spanish bullfighter bolero then the boxiness, then it drapes and cascades. With some modification it wouldn’t be too terrible but this is not a winning look for me.

Jennifer Aniston beauty- how to get it

Jennifer Aniston is beautiful. I know people are divided on this but trust me. I’ve seen her close up and in person and she’s tiny and fit and has that gorgeous hair that’s even prettier in person- I wanted to pet it like a dog.  I never got to actually  meet her, only kind of size her up from a foot away.

I love her easy makeup and seemingly effortless hair. She never looks too fussy or too made up, her look here is something we can all achieve. I tried to break down the look with makeup I frequently use. I want to show you that you can look great using makeup from your local drugstore. I really recommend the Buxom Lash Liner,  a good investment if you want one product to really indulge in. Its has a wonderful texture, lasts all day and enhances lash growth.

I’ve tried so many foundations and have a hard time staying loyal to just one. But I’ve been using PhotoReady Foundation by Revlonand I like it. I use a teeny amount smoothed over my face after applingArcona Reozone spf 40. Daily I use Murad Oil Control Lotiononly on my T-zone to keep oil away and hopefully shrink the look of my pores which are so obvious in that pesky T-zone. I’m sure Jennifer has perfect  poreless skin and she skips that step.

I follow this by a dusting Mineral Essence powder in Magic Finish,Illamasqua blush in the pink shade of Chased which will give you glowing, rosy cheeks. For a drugstore brand, try Maybelline Expert Wear Blush in Berry Sorbet.

On the lips is a classic pink with a hint of frost- check out Lancome Color Fever gloss in Pink Gravity. Or ty out my fave Burts Bees Lip shimmer in Guava. I keep this in my purse 24/7 and frequently use it for the minty essence and great look of it. As a fellow beauty lover, you know that MAC has lip glass available in every color of the rainbow and surely you can find the perfect pink lipstick with a matching Lip Glass to get Jennifer’s look.

One of my favorite eyeliners in the whole world is  Buxom Lash Lashliner which enhances lashes and the long lasting Buxom Stay There Eye Shadow in Mutt, a bronzed taupe. I havent tried it but Maybelline offers a gel liner that looks like it has potential.

For mascara, on special occasions, I love love love Lancome Precious Cells, which make my lashes look so full and pretty but not clumpy or too thick. For day to day, I highly recommendL’Oreal’s Double Extend Lash Boosting mascara.

And thats all you need to look exactly like Jennifer! Oh, I wish. I’m still on the fence about the Brazilian Blowout but the more I study Jen’s perfect hair, the more I want to get it done and have smooth silky long hair.

If I were going to the Emmy’s….

If I were going to the Emmys tomorrow- I wish!- I’d wear something like this. A deep purple because its almost autumn and I like the dark jewel tone. The flat shoes because my back always hurts when I’m in heels and the gown is long enough to hide the fact they are flat…plus they are Louboutins.

A bejeweled clutch in those rich colors that compliment my skin tone (I’d hope). All thats needed here is a little shimmer around the neck so I added a multi-strand necklace. A bracelet or any more jewelry would compete against the clutch so I thought a beautiful ring would accentuate the color of the gown yet be elegant.

I recently learned that coral lipstick makes teeth look yellowish so I’d have to go with a blue-based pinky red. Definitely old school glamour cat’s eye for the eye makeup and a nice rosy pink cheek. Lots and lots of mascara and some false lashes too. I’d style my hair in an updo…something different.

I’m getting so excited, its almost like I’m going. Well, someday. Fingers crossed.

Avene for sensitive skin

If you have sensitive skin and have looked high and low for products that don’t contain heavy fragrance,  irritants or clog your skin, look no further than Avene. I recommend this brand to all my friends and their friends who need a gentle skincare routine. I have a friend who is so sensitive to everything that even the air bothers her and she swears up and down by Avene. She told me she should be a spokesperson for this brand because she loves it so much.

I am very excited to share this with you- the  Tolerance Exreme Cleansing lotion. It  features the first ever 100% hypo allergenic pump dispenser. Bacterial and other irritants cannot get into the tube.  There is no possibility of contamination since the top pops out to dispense what you need, then it retracts. A lot of time and effort went into developing this patented ‘D.E.F.I (Device for Exclusive Formula Integrity) delivery system’.

Here’s other information you should know:

Based on the sterile manufacturing process of E.T.S. and the delivery process of D.E.F.I * Ultra gentle, no-rinse formula cleanses, leaving the skin clear and fresh without irritation *Restores the skin barrier and decreases skin reactivity * Helps prevent skin irritation and allergies *Formulated with only 6 ingredients for maximum tolerance * Fragrance-free, preservative-free, colorant-free, surfactant-free, alcohol-free, emulsifier-free * 100% sterile, 100% pure, 100% safe * Avène Thermal Spring Water to soothe and soften skin * Hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic

I also want to mention Avene’s 100%   High Protection Tinted compact. This formula contains antioxidant minerals, provides protection from dangerous  UVA/UVB  rays, and the spf is a high 50!

If I know I’m going to be in the sun for hours, this is the product I choose to use on my face.  As with all of Avene’s products, this one is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.
