One word for this book, wow! Two words, must read!
Bad news, though- it won’t be out until July but do not despair because time is flying by and there are many good books to read until then. But seriously, this book.
The Marriage Pact by Michelle Richmond starts off with a bang and keeps you turning pages. Something I’ve learned as an avid reader is that many stories (and movies) tend to sag in places so when a book has you entertained from beginning to end, its a real treat.
Alice and Jake are newly married and madly in love. Alice is a former singer turned lawyer who is such a complicated woman that Jake is never tired of learning new things about his beloved. When the two receive a mysterious box with an invitation to join “The Pact” they are intrigued, especially upon learning that “The Pact” is a secret club, designed to keep members married specifically by abiding by a strict set of rules.
Jake and Alice sign the contract but soon learn there’s a sinister side to this group and that essentially, there’s no way out. The boundaries start to mess with Jake’s head, how well does he really know his wife? Are they really happy? What is happiness in a marriage? Jake’s experience as a therapist gives him an interesting point of view.
The Pact goes much deeper than you’d think and this thriller will keep you guessing. What an interesting and unique idea…the marriage pact. I’m glad the author didn’t rush the ending or give an ending that felt contrived. Now I am eager to check out Michelle Richmond’s other books!
Next up is Dead Letters by Caite Dolan-Leach. I am really into dark twisty books lately, it seems. I need another one like Julia Claiborne’s incredible novel, Be Frank With Me or something like Tell The Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt to break up all of these mysteries!
Here’s the scoop on Dead Letters:
Ava Antipova has her reasons for running away: a failing family vineyard, a romantic betrayal, a mercurial sister, an absent father, a mother slipping into dementia. In Paris, Ava renounces her terribly practical undergraduate degree, acquires a French boyfriend and a taste for much better wine, and erases her past. Two years later, she must return to upstate New York. Her twin sister, Zelda, is dead.
Even in a family of alcoholics, Zelda Antipova was the wild one, notorious for her mind games and destructive behavior. Stuck tending the vineyard and the girls’ increasingly unstable mother, Zelda was allegedly burned alive when she passed out in the barn with a lit cigarette. But Ava finds the official explanation a little too neat. A little too Zelda. Then she receives a cryptic message—from her sister.
Just as Ava suspected, Zelda’s playing one of her games. In fact, she’s outdone herself, leaving a series of clues about her disappearance. With the police stuck on a red herring, Ava follows the trail laid just for her, thinking like her sister, keeping her secrets, immersing herself in Zelda’s drama and her outlandish circle of friends and lovers. Along the way, Zelda forces her twin to confront their twisted history and the boy who broke Ava’s heart. But why? Is Zelda trying to punish Ava for leaving? To teach her a lesson? Or is she simply trying to write her own ending?
I can’t help it, I love a good murder mystery especially when the person who died is not dead. Say what? A good friend of mine read this in one sitting so I’m going to have to dig into this one soon. Like tonight!
I have been a huge fan of Sonia Choquette’s for many years. Her books are so full of love and wisdom that I have torn through each one, gleaning the most excellent advice from the pages. I can’t wait for You Are Amazing.
Like many others, I am prone to depression and anxiety, I know this will turn things around for me!
Sonia and Sabrina are sisters and best friends. Trained by their mom, a world-renowned spirituality teacher and visionary guide, they know how to move through life with trust and confidence using their intuition and their intellect. They also have super regular problems, like What the heck is bad vibing me right now?, or Where does my soul want to lead me next? They love chic restaurants and Beyoncé. They talk astrology and psychology. They listen to what their Spirits love and they build their lives around what they love, instead of trying to shove their Spirits into their lives.
In this book, they share with you their successes and failures. They teach you how to become your own best friend, trust your vibes and your heart, quiet that jerk that lives in your head, and move through life with confidence, trust, and creativity, even if you ’re not totally sure where you ’re going. Deep and real, yet silly and fun, Sonia and Sabrina invite you to become part of their tribe so you can create the life you want!
I rarely plug my own books but this one is only $1.99 on Amazon and is a super quick read….you can find it here.
Also, I wrote an article over at Medium called Reading, Writing and Unrealized Dreams, all about my personal struggles with becoming a real writer. Check it out!
