Review: Josie Maran cosmetics

When Josie Maran introduced her Argan Oil infused makeup and skincare, I thought the products were going to be totally natural. She’s the epitome of health and wellness so I just assumed…her products would be toxin free. Unfortunately they are not- although I do really like them and appreciate that her idea is a step in the right direction!

Keep this in mind: Argan oil is particularly useless in a makeup product because the oil quickly goes rancid when exposed to air. {source} I would guess that there would have to be preservatives in the products to ensure they don’t go bad.

Choosing to go just a little natural or hard core organic is your choice. Personally, I prefer the cleanest, greenest, most natural products available. Having said that, I do occasionally use “dirty products” and have relaxed a bit about  what I use, allowing the occasional dirty product. My makeup varies from super clean to somewhat clean to a few Dior lip glosses that aren’t remotely green or natural. My skincare on the other hand is always green, non toxic, clean and safe.

Let’s take a look at Josie’s products and you can decide for yourself if you’d like to try them!

The Argan Oil Pressed Powder is a very nice powder that does a fine job of smoothing skin, decreasing the appearance of oil and large pores. I used it with a brush and dabbed it on my face over the Argan Oil Foundation.  Its texture is nice and silky, it is ideal for on the go touch ups although the compact is a bit large for my own small makeup bag.

Mica, Magnesium Silicate, Zinc Stearate, Kaolin, Corn Starch Modified, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Lauroyl Lysine, Moringa Pterygosperma (Moringa) Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Tocopherol, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phytosterols, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides

The most toxic chemical found in here is called Tocopheryl Acetate which you can read about it detail by going here. Its a skin condtioning agent that poses a moderate hazard to your health. Also, I wonder about Hydrogenated Soybean Oil in a beauty product?

The Argan Matchmaker Serum Foundation in Fair/Light is  good, it smooths the complexion and doesn’t look or feel heavy. Like her other products this is paraben free and contains argan oil. There are very few colors available. I read other reviews lamenting the color changing ability of this product which starts off as white then adjusts to suit your own skin tone. I had no problem with it but my skin tone is really quite light. Darker tones might have an issue.

Coconut Alkanes, Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Butylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Polysilicaone-11, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Quarternium-90 Bentonite, Polymethylsilsesquioxane/Benzamidazole/ diamond Copolymer, Soy Lecithin, Argan Oil, Natural Fragrance, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Propylene Carbonate, C18-36, Acid Triglyceride, Mica, Polysorbate 20, Silica Dimethicone Silylate, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Silica, Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, PEG-200, Hexylene Glycol, Polyester-1, Decyl Glucoside, Iron Oxides

There are natural ingredients but also some  that concern me. I wish Josie would reformulate her products to be *really* natural and leave the toxins out completely. When I read something called Polymethylsilsesquioxane,  I have to look it up. That particular ingredient is a silicone ingredient used in cosmetics and hair care. It smooths the skin/hair and also repels water. There is also fragrance in here which can cause skin irritation and allergies. I also had to look up  this one: Phenoxyethanol, which is a stabliser and a preservative,  synthetically produced.

I am not dissing Josie Maran’s cosmetics at all. I use her mascara and I own a lip gloss that I like (both score low ratings on the Skin Deep database).

Again, its all about what YOU are looking for in makeup. Do you mind some chemicals? Are you okay with researching anything that raises a question? Do toxins that pose a minor risk worry you?
