What is Spirulina and why should you consume it?

A few days ago I posted one of my juicing recipes on Instagram and mentioned that I added a spoonful of Spirulina which prompted a few emails and texts and comments like this:

“What is spirulina?”

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that comes from fresh water. Its chock full of protein, vitamins, minerals, zinc, copper, iron.  Sounds good, right? It gets better. This powerhouse boosts the immune system, helps with high blood pressure, decreases cholesterol, and protects again cancer. It encourages the growth of  healthy bacteria in your gut too.

I bought a powdered spirulina- chlorella  blend in a small jar at the health food store, just in case it was totally disgusting. I figured if I used it up, I could go back and buy a larger jar. I add one heaping teaspoon to my VitaMix when I blend my greens and its not bad. I will be going back for the bigger jar!

Now you might be asking about Chlorella. This too is a form of algae, not the kind you find on a dirty swimming pool or old swamp. It contains antioxidants, vitamin C, iron and B-complex.  Chlorella is known to cleanse the blood and offers many of the benefits of spirulina.

These are both so good for you. Algae contains chlorophyll, the chemical that makes plants green.

“Chlorophyll is a complete food that contains proteins, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, even fiber, and one of the first plant foods seen as a life saving substance. One of the most important health benefits of chlorophyll is that it’s a super immune booster.”{ source }

If you are working on your health, you might want to buy a jar of powdered Spirulina-Chlorella and add it to your juices or smoothies!
