I admit it- I am a lip product junkie. I love gloss, stains, frosty lipsticks that remind me of 1986 and gloss that reflects so much you can see your reflection in my lips. However I do NOT like toxins. And I certainly don’t want any in my lip products because like it or not, I’m going to lick my lips or eat and consume my lip gloss at some point.
In a test of 32 top selling lipsticks, researchers discovered “lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals — some at potentially toxic levels, according to researchers at the University of California-Berkeley’s School of Public Health.” Further in the article, it states, “some of the toxic metals are occurring at levels that could pose health problems in the long run.” and “the study found that some of the lipsticks could result in excessive exposure to chromium, a carcinogen linked to stomach tumors. High use could potentially cause overexposure to aluminum, cadmium and manganese.” (source)
Trace amounts of metals and other toxins over the years will surely add up, right? So I’m going to be sure that I use clean, green, natural lip products as much as I can.
Red Apple Lipstick is certified gluten free, paraben free, soy free, dairy free and allergen free. These lipsticks are also vegan, natural and cruelty free. What more could we ask for? I tried two lipsticks, a red-pink called Love My Kiss and Secrets which is pink with gold shimmer. I fell instantly in love with the pretty colors, smooth texture, and the fact they do not contain toxins. I swiped the color across my lips a few times and let it build up a bit so it was more intense. You can view all the beautiful shades here. These smell so good reminding me of candy!
They are fully transparent about their ingredients and list everything clearly here. I’m so grateful to have discovered this brand and now you can add these lip products to your beauty arsenal. This brand also offers eye shadows, lip liners, glosses and balms.
Another brand I can steer you to is Afterglow Cosmetics. I tried a few things from this certified gluten free brand (more on that later) but I loved the glosses which worked nicely with my Red Apple Lipsticks. I always like a dab of gloss over a lipstick.
From Afterglow, I tried a lipstick which I loved called Muse (a perfect pink peach), and two glosses called Menagie (pink) and Sequin (sheer red), which have been my constant companions. Afterglow does not contain parabens, nanos, bismuth oxychloride, gluten or talc and the products are mineral based. The Lip Glosses contain organic aloe vera and vanilla oil and are formulated without harmful chemicals too. They are smooth and shiny. Afterglow is uses certified organic ingredients, is certified Green, and Cruelty free. They are also PETA approved. The only animal product used is beeswax so they cannot be called Vegan. You can read about this here.
Would I place orders for more products from Afterglow and Red Apple Lipsticks? A most definite YES. Will you?
